Dain Aetos Without Spoilers
Dain and Violet grew up together because their parents served together. His father was a trusted aide to Violet’s mother, General Lilith Sorrengail, so the two children moved between military postings and made their own fun wherever they landed. Why Did Dain Aetos Betray Violet?
Dain betrayed Violet by using his signet on her without consent, then passing what he learned to his father. He did it out of fear for her and a belief that his father and the Codex would handle the information responsibly, not out of a wish to hurt her. But the memory he read concerned Xaden’s secret, and Colonel Aetos used it to set a trap at Athebyne. Dain did not intend the outcome, which included Liam Mairi’s death, and Violet holds him accountable for it anyway.
In Iron Flame, Violet treats Dain with open hostility and tells him what she thinks of his actions. Later his hostility is partly jealousy that Violet chose Xaden. As wingleader of Fourth Wing, Xaden moves Dain’s squad into his wing, so the two are in constant contact.
After Dain turns on Varrish in Iron Flame, Xaden lets him live and later tells Violet that Dain’s intentions had changed. Dain tells Violet that if she trusts Xaden, he will too.
