Liam Mairi: Fourth Wing Character, Dragon, Signet & Story Explained

Spoiler warning: The sections labeled “Spoilers” discuss the Battle of Resson and Iron Flame. The spoiler-free section below is safe for readers still on Fourth Wing.

Liam Mairi is a first-year dragon rider in Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing, the foster brother of Xaden Riorson and one of Violet Sorrengail’s closest friends at Basgiath War College. He is bonded to the red daggertail dragon Deigh, and his known signet is farsight. He matters because he is the warmth of Xaden’s circle, and because his loss shapes Violet and the story that follows.

Liam Mairi Without Spoilers

Liam is a marked rider, meaning the child of a rebel leader from the failed Tyrrish Rebellion, who was forced into the Riders Quadrant. He grew up alongside Xaden in Tirvainne under Duke Lindell, and the two are foster brothers. At Basgiath he is one of the strongest cadets of his year, and he is funny, loyal, and quick to make friends.

When Xaden needs someone to protect Violet, Liam takes the job and becomes her friend in the process. He is bonded to Deigh, a red daggertail, and his signet is farsight, the ability to see over great distances. He also whittles small wooden figures and flirts with Jesinia Neilwart, a scribe and Violet’s friend.

Who Is Liam Mairi?

Liam Mairi is Xaden Riorson’s foster brother, Violet Sorrengail’s bodyguard-turned-friend, and the rider of Deigh in Fourth Wing. Within Xaden’s circle of marked riders, he is the easy, sociable one. Xaden is guarded and Liam is open, which makes him the person Violet can relax around in a hostile school.

For Violet, Liam is proof that not every marked rider hates her for her mother’s role in the rebellion’s fall. He is also one of the first people to treat her as capable rather than fragile. Readers know him as a bright presence and as the loss that cuts deepest at Resson. For a broader look at the cast, see the Fourth Wing characters guide.

How Old Is Liam Mairi?

The published books do not give Liam an exact age that I could verify against an authoritative source. Fan wikis list a specific age and birth year, but those figures come from fan calculation, so this page does not treat them as canon. What the text does establish is that he is a first-year cadet, and his sister Sloane enters the college the following year.

When Is Liam Mairi’s Birthday?

The published books do not provide a confirmed birthday for Liam Mairi. Dates circulating on fan sites and social media are not supported by the text or by the author’s official channels.

How Do You Pronounce Liam Mairi?

I did not find an author-confirmed pronunciation guide for the surname. “Liam” is the familiar English name. Until Rebecca Yarros or the publisher confirms the surname, the safest approach is to rely on audiobook narration and author Q&As rather than fan phonetics.

What Does Liam Mairi Look Like?

Canon descriptions. Liam is described as tall and heavily built, with light blond hair, blue eyes, and a prominent nose. Like every rider, he carries a rebellion relic, the mark that identifies the children of the rebellion’s leaders. He moves with an athlete’s ease and is noticed early for speed and skill on the assessment parapet.

Fan estimates. Readers often guess at an exact height, and artists interpret his hair and build differently. None of that is official. If you want an image, use the book cover or your own reading of the text rather than fan renderings.

Liam Mairi’s Background

Liam’s father, Isaac Mairi, and his mother, a colonel, were involved in the Tyrrish Rebellion. After the rebellion failed, both parents were killed, the Mairi home passed to a noble loyal to Navarre, and the Mairi children were separated. Liam went to Tirvainne to be fostered by Duke Lindell, who also fostered Xaden. Sloane, his younger sister, was sent elsewhere.

As marked children, Liam and Xaden were required to enter the Riders Quadrant at Conscription Day. Xaden trained Liam to fight beforehand, which helps explain both Liam’s skill and his loyalty to Xaden. Liam’s strength as a cadet is partly the result of that early preparation.

Liam Mairi’s Personality

Liam is warm, funny, and loyal. He jokes in tense moments and teases Violet about Xaden. Under the humor he is disciplined. He accepts Xaden’s orders, keeps Violet’s secrets when she asks him to, and does not abandon a post he has been given.

Two contrasts sharpen his character:

  • Dain Aetos leans on rules and on his own idea of what is best for Violet. Liam worries about her too, but he respects her judgment more.
  • Xaden Riorson leads through control and distance. Liam leads through openness and humor, and often softens what Xaden holds back.

His courage is practical rather than showy, and it shows in the way he puts himself between Violet and danger. Both Xaden and Violet trust him, and that trust is earned rather than assumed.

Liam Mairi: Fourth Wing Character, Dragon, Signet & Story Explained

Who Is Liam Mairi’s Dragon?

Liam’s dragon is Deigh, a red daggertail. Daggertails are one of several dragon tail types in the series, alongside swordtails, scorpiontails, and morningstartails.

Deigh is strong for his type and fights alongside Liam at War Games and at the Battle of Resson. The bond between them is central to Liam’s abilities, because the series presents a signet as magic channeled from dragon to rider. Deigh is also the reason Liam’s signet exists at all.

At Resson, Deigh is fatally wounded protecting Tairn from a wyvern. Liam does not survive long after.

What Was Liam Mairi’s Signet in Fourth Wing?

Liam’s signet in Fourth Wing is farsight, the ability to see distant places and events clearly. Publisher-adjacent and reference sources both list farsight as his signet. It gives him and Xaden’s group information in situations where distance and timing matter.

A second ability appears during the Battle of Resson. Violet sees Liam wield ice, which is not part of farsight. Fan sources describe this as a second signet, ice wielding, and some readers debate whether the text is hinting at hidden potential. I found no author statement resolving that debate, so this page reports both abilities as shown and does not add a third.

What the signets say about Liam:

  • Farsight suits a character who watches over others.
  • The ice at Resson shows he was holding more back than anyone realized.
  • He does not lean on his power as a shortcut, and he keeps his secrets for the group’s sake.

Liam Mairi and Xaden Riorson

Liam and Xaden are foster brothers who grew up under Duke Lindell after their parents were killed. Xaden trained Liam to fight before Conscription Day, and Liam repeatedly makes clear how much he owes him. Xaden trusts Liam enough to assign him to protect Violet, a task he would give to almost no one else.

Within the marked riders, Liam is the person who can tease Xaden and tell him when he is wrong. When Liam dies, Xaden loses a brother as well as a comrade. For more on Xaden, see the Xaden Riorson character page.

Liam Mairi and Violet Sorrengail

Liam and Violet become friends through small, ordinary moments: his guarding her, his teasing, and time together on Archives duty. Violet trusts him partly because he never treats her as helpless, and partly because he keeps his word even when he disagrees with her. He often puts himself between her and danger.

Where Dain tends to steer Violet, Liam supports her. Dain’s loyalty carries control with it, and Liam’s carries respect. That difference is one reason his death hurts Violet so much. It is the loss of someone who saw her clearly. See the Violet Sorrengail page and the Dain Aetos page for more.

Liam Mairi and Sloane Mairi

Sloane Mairi is Liam’s younger sister. The two were separated after the rebellion’s fall, and Liam’s concern for her stays with him at Basgiath. In his last moments he asks Violet to look after Sloane when she arrives the next year.

Liam also leaves Sloane letters. According to secondary sources, Violet later saves and passes them on to Sloane, which keeps his love for her present in Iron Flame. Sloane initially blames Violet for her brother’s death. Through Sloane, Liam’s legacy continues in the living.

Liam Mairi and Jesinia Neilwart

Jesinia is a scribe and Violet’s friend. Liam meets her on Archives duty and flirts with her openly, using sign language to do so. Violet warns him that Jesinia is looking for something serious. The text presents this as a light flirtation, and it goes no further before his death.

Who Did Liam Have a Crush On in Fourth Wing?

Confirmed: Liam’s clearest romantic interest in Fourth Wing is Jesinia Neilwart, whom he flirts with during Archives duty. Implied: the interest is mutual enough that Jesinia responds shyly. Reader interpretation: many fans see a deeper connection or a lost romance, but the text does not develop it. Violet and Liam are friends only, and there is no evidence of romantic feeling between them.

Liam Mairi in Fourth Wing

Liam enters Basgiath in Second Squad, Tail Section, Fourth Wing, and after the attack on Violet, Xaden places him in her squad to keep her safe. During War Games, Jack Barlowe stabs him and he falls from Deigh, and Violet saves him using Andarna’s power. At Athebyne, Liam is present with the group as gryphon fliers and the truth about the venin come into view. The book’s final battle is at Resson, where Liam fights with farsight, ice, and Deigh. He is also present for the betrayal that leads the group there.

Spoilers: What Happens to Liam Mairi?

Spoilers ahead. Liam dies at the Battle of Resson at the end of Fourth Wing. Deigh is fatally wounded protecting Tairn from a wyvern, and Liam is gravely hurt and dies soon afterward, with Violet beside him.

His last request is that Violet look after Sloane. His death matters to Violet because he chose to protect her when he could have run, and because he was her friend. It matters to Xaden and Sloane because Liam was their family. The book presents it plainly and does not linger on gore.

Spoilers: How Does Liam Mairi Die?

Liam dies of wounds sustained at the Battle of Resson, shortly after his dragon Deigh is fatally injured. He asks to be brought close to Deigh, and Violet stays with him. His last words to her are about honor and friendship.

Spoilers: Liam Mairi in Iron Flame

Liam does not return alive in Iron Flame. He appears in Violet’s mind during her torture by Varrish, and he lives on through Sloane and his letters.

Was Liam a Hallucination in Iron Flame?

The book presents Liam’s appearance as a hallucination. During her captivity, Violet sees Liam in her cell and immediately tells herself he is not real, blaming pain and dehydration. Liam himself does not insist otherwise. He suggests that Malek, the god of death, might have sent him as a kindness, and Violet rejects the idea.

Rebecca Yarros has said she chose Liam because hallucinating Xaden could confuse readers, and that she does not plan to bring characters back. Some readers link the scene to Violet’s second signet, which the series later reveals as dream walking. Those are theories, and the text does not state that Liam was a ghost or a signet effect.

What the scene does: Liam’s voice becomes a coping mechanism, telling Violet what she needs to hear and keeping her from feeling alone.

Liam Mairi’s Legacy

Liam’s legacy is about character, not politics.

  • Violet. His death is one of the losses that hardens her. His faith in her also carries into her captivity, when she leans on his memory to survive.
  • Xaden. Liam is a brother lost, and Xaden’s grief shapes how he treats Violet and the risks he takes.
  • Sloane. She comes to Basgiath because of him, at first with anger toward Violet. Through her and his letters, his love for his sister is still felt.
  • Resson. Liam’s sacrifice is bound up with the story’s cost. He and Deigh die protecting others.
  • Symbol. He stands for loyalty and sacrifice, and his memory keeps coming back in the story. He is loved as much as he is useful.

Is Liam Mairi on AO3?

Yes. Archive of Our Own is a user-generated fanfiction archive, and Liam appears in fan-created works there, as does Jesinia in pairing tags. Those stories are fan interpretations, not canon.

Is There a Liam Mairi Casting for the TV Series?

Prime Video ordered a Fourth Wing series in 2026, but I found no official casting announcement for Liam. Actors named online, including some rumors, are fan casting or unverified. Check official Prime Video announcements for updates.
