Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry: Series Order, Spice Level and Reader’s Guide

Shield of Sparrows is an adult romantic fantasy by Devney Perry, published in 2025 by Red Tower Books. Princess Odessa is married by treaty to a prince she has never met and crosses a monster-haunted continent beside a feared warrior known as the Guardian. It is Book 1 of a trilogy: Rites of the Starling followed on April 7, 2026, and the final book, Seven and the Swift, is scheduled for March 9, 2027.

This guide answers the questions readers ask most: what the book is about, how spicy it is, the reading order, which editions exist, and what is happening with the movie. It draws on author, publisher and library sources and on published reviews rather than a first-hand read, and it labels opinion as opinion. Spoilers are kept in one marked section near the end. Last checked: October 2026.

What is Shield of Sparrows about?

The publisher’s premise opens with a myth: long ago the gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind humans they must kneel. Odessa, a princess of Quentis, has spent her life obeying her father’s will. She was never meant to rule or to fight.

That changes when a legendary monster hunter arrives with a prince, and she is bound by an ancient treaty, sealed in her own blood, to a husband she barely knows. She travels across dangerous lands beside a warrior who seems to despise her as much as she despises him. Everyone wants her to become something: a queen, a spy, a sacrifice. The question driving the book is whether she can choose a role of her own.

The world: Calandra and its monsters

The story is set in Calandra, divided into five kingdoms bound by treaties and old magic. Odessa is from Quentis. Much of the book takes place in Turah, home of the prince she marries. Monsters are a constant threat. Reviewers mention the crux, large winged creatures whose migration looms over the story, and creatures such as marroweels (sea monsters), tarkin and bariwolves. The Shield of Sparrows is also the name of the treaty that arranges the marriage.

Main characters (no spoilers)

  • Odessa Cross: a princess of Quentis who has always been overshadowed by her family.
  • Prince Zavier of Turah: the prince who claims Odessa as his bride under the treaty.
  • The Guardian: a feared monster hunter who travels with the prince and escorts Odessa.
  • Mae: Odessa’s younger half-sister, who was expected to fulfil the treaty.
  • General Banner: a general of Quentis and Odessa’s former fiancé.
  • Brielle and Jocelyn: the two lady’s maids who travel with Odessa to Turah.

Is Shield of Sparrows spicy?

Yes. It includes on-page sexual content, but reviewers disagree on how intense it is.

The author’s own content warning for the series lists sexual activity and graphic language, among other items. Beyond that, heat ratings are personal and use different scales. Our reading of the evidence is moderate heat that builds slowly alongside a slow-burn romance. That is an editorial interpretation, not a fact about the book.

How reviewers rate the heat

SourceRatingWhat they say
Ink & Imaginings1.5 out of 5Mild spice in a slow-burn romance
Burner Kindle3 out of 5Open door, but readers are spared many details
Romance.io listingSteam 3 out of 5Reader-submitted rating; the same site lists the sequel at 4 out of 5

These ratings are opinions and cannot be averaged. They do show that Book 1 sits below Book 2 on at least one site.

Shield of Sparrows spicy chapters

We could not confirm a reliable chapter list. Some blogs publish chapter numbers, but numbering differs between print, ebook and audio, and we can’t check those lists against the text. If you want to skip scenes, use a spoiler-tagged community source and match it against your own edition.

Content warnings

The author lists these for the whole series: combat, violence, blood, gore, death of humans and animals, injury, dismemberment, illness, hospitalization, arson, alcohol use, poisoning, trafficking, threat and mention of rape, graphic language and sexual activity. She notes that the list can reveal plot points. Reader-submitted tags on Romance.io add items such as child death and abuse. Those tags are crowd-sourced, not official.

Shield of Sparrows tropes

Based on the publisher’s description and reviewers:

  • Enemies to lovers: the publisher’s own tagline.
  • Forced or arranged marriage: the treaty marriage drives the opening.
  • Hidden identities and secrets: a recurring reviewer point.
  • Bodyguard or protector: a warrior escorts and trains the heroine.
  • Slow burn: the romance builds gradually. For more, see our slow-burn fantasy romance list.
  • Court politics, betrayal and training sequences.

Is Shield of Sparrows a why-choose romance?

We found no source that describes it as a why-choose romance. The publisher’s description and the plot recaps we read present a single central romance, so it does not appear to be one. We have not confirmed this against the text. One reviewer calls the early setup a love triangle of sorts; the spoiler section explains why.

Shield of Sparrows series order

OrderTitlePublication
1Shield of SparrowsMay 6, 2025
2Rites of the StarlingApril 7, 2026
3Seven and the SwiftScheduled for March 9, 2027

The publisher’s listings say the trilogy is best enjoyed in order.

Is Shield of Sparrows a series?

Yes. It is the first book of the Shield of Sparrows trilogy. The author’s page for Book 3 calls it the final story in the trilogy.

How many books are in the series?

Three: two are published and the third is scheduled for March 9, 2027 in US and UK ebook listings.

Is Shield of Sparrows a duology or a standalone?

Neither. Some older or unupdated listings still show only two books, which probably explains the duology question. Book 1 also ends on a cliffhanger, according to reviewers, so you will want the sequel.

Shield of Sparrows Book 2

Rites of the Starling is a direct sequel, published April 7, 2026. The official description follows a princess crossing a cursed realm to learn the truth about her family, in a quest that becomes tied to a lost warrior. Our guide to Rites of the Starling covers its spice level, characters, editions and map.

Shield of Sparrows Book 3

Seven and the Swift is listed for March 9, 2027 by Amazon US and Penguin. Regional dates differ: Penguin Australia lists the ebook for March 9 and the hardback for April 9, 2027. Release dates can move, so check your retailer. Penguin’s listing says the trilogy has sold over one million copies, which is a publisher claim.

Shield of Sparrows special edition and sprayed edges

The special edition is the Deluxe Limited Edition. Listings describe a first-print-run hardcover with sprayed edges, illustrated endpapers and a foiled case stamp, sold in the US and Canada only while supplies lasted. For Book 2, Perry announced a sprayed-edge first print run and said that, as with the earlier book, once those copies are gone they are gone. Retailers have also listed a deluxe limited edition of Book 3.

If you are buying Book 1’s deluxe edition now:

  • The standard hardcover shares the same title, so confirm the listing says “Deluxe Limited Edition”.
  • Resale listings include signed and retailer-specific copies, so ask the seller exactly what is being sold.
  • Sprayed edges added by a third party are not the publisher’s edition.

Audiobook and other ways to read

The unabridged audiobook is published by RBmedia under its Tantor imprint. Public libraries carry the print book, ebook and audiobook, so check your library’s app before buying.

Does Shield of Sparrows have a map?

A map of Calandra exists. Perry shared it on her Patreon, where she describes it as the map readers will find in the second book. We have not confirmed whether Book 1 includes one, and we do not reproduce the map here out of respect for the author’s rights. Our Rites of the Starling guide covers the Book 2 map.

Is Shield of Sparrows worth reading?

Reactions are split in useful ways. Kirkus Reviews, as summarized on Wikipedia, praised the worldbuilding and relentless pace but wanted more depth on Mae’s motivations. Burner Kindle gave it three and a half stars, citing slow pacing and the heroine’s constant questions. Miles of Comfort and Books gave it five stars and praised the slow burn and the worldbuilding. The publisher’s accolades list includes a 2025 Goodreads Choice Awards finalist spot for Readers’ Favorite Romantasy.

It suits you if you like slow-burn enemies to lovers, court politics, monsters and a heroine who grows into her strength, and you don’t mind waiting for payoffs. It may not suit you if you want fast pacing, very explicit heat, or answers all at once.

Spoilers ahead: Book 1 answers

Stop here if you haven’t finished the book. Everything below reveals plot.

Is the Guardian the prince in Shield of Sparrows?

Yes. The Guardian is Ransom Wolfe, the true crown prince of Turah. The man introduced as Prince Zavier is Ransom’s cousin and political stand-in. Because the Guardian spoke the marriage vows aloud on the prince’s behalf, Odessa discovers she has been married to Ransom all along. (Sources: SuperSummary and Overbooked.)

Does Odessa have powers in Shield of Sparrows?

Book 1 hints that something about her is different. For example, she can sense magic that Ransom cannot. It does not fully explain this. Ransom’s own abilities come from an infection called Lyssa, which also affects the monsters. Book 2 explains Odessa’s nature, and that is a Book 2 spoiler covered in our Rites guide.

Who does Odessa love?

Ransom, the Guardian. Their enemies-to-lovers romance is the book’s central relationship. The “love triangle” some readers mention comes from Odessa’s confusion about which man she is married to before the reveal.Does Odessa have powers?

Who is Brielle?

Brielle is one of Odessa’s two lady’s maids and her closest companion on the journey to Turah. Several recaps say she is secretly engaged to General Banner, the man Odessa was promised to. Two recaps also say she is killed in the final attack; we have not confirmed that against the text.

How does Shield of Sparrows end?

In brief: the crux migration arrives early and the fortress is attacked. General Banner tries to kill Odessa, and she kills him. Ransom lets himself be carried off by a crux to buy time for Odessa and Evie to escape, guided by a Voster priest. Odessa ends the book separated from Ransom, not knowing whether he survived. Recaps disagree on the fate of some other characters, so we leave them out.

Who is Caspia in Shield of Sparrows?

Caspia is a point-of-view character introduced in Book 2, so the answer is a Book 2 spoiler. We keep it behind a spoiler warning in our guide to Rites of the Starling.
